Heard in 2012 (15): The Bamboos’ ‘The Wilhelm Scream’ (2012)

This is the last post in this series.

The Bamboos—a jazz/funk group from Melbourne—have produced some great covers over the last four or five years. Some of the best (like this one) feature Megan Washington. Their rendition of Kings of Leon’s ‘King of the Rodeo’ superseded the original.

While not outshining the brilliant original, their cover of James Blake’s ‘The Wilhelm Scream’ maintains its emotional power while transposing it into a different genre. As is the case with all good covers this one highlights the quality of the songwriting and melody in the original, and made me go back to listen to it with new ears.
