Heard in 2012 (10): Twin Shadow’s ‘Golden Light’ (2012)

Twin Shadow’s 2010 debut Forget is one of my favourite records, so I had high expectations for his sophomore Confess in 2012. It did not reach my expectations; it’s a little too overblown and camp for my liking. Nonetheless, there are some great tracks.

Opener ‘Golden Light’ is one of them. Incorporating the steel drums that have become so popular among electronic producers in the last few years (thanks in large part to Jamie xx) and a few more dub step elements than his previous record, the track keeps the basic elements heard on Forget: great rhythm, solid bass guitar grooves, and a black tenor singing about loss and betrayal. He may be depressed about something but he tells us about it with style.
